Nelly Furtado Announces ‘The Spirit Indestructible Tour’While the industry collectively gasped at the first week sales of Nelly Furtado‘s latest album ‘The Spirit Indestructible’, the singer is not letting the fact she sold just 6000 copies halt her hustle. For, in the spirit of pressing on, the 33 year old has announced that she is embarking on a tour in support of the album in January. Details after the jump… As per Furtado’s official website, the Canadian songbird will set sail on ‘The Spirit Indestructible Tour’ in home territory. Peep the dates below… Nelly Furtado, The Spirit Indestructible Tour dates: January 8th Save On Foods Memorial Centre, Victoria January 9th Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver January 12th Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Calgary January 14th Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre, Medicine Hat January 15th Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton January 18th MTS Centre, Winnipeg January 19th Thunder Bay Community Auditorium January 21st National Arts Centre, Ottawa January 24th Sony Centre For The Performing Arts, Toronto January 26th The Colosseum at Caesar’s Windsor, Windsor January 28th Hamilton Place Theatre, Hamilton January 29th Centre In The Square, Kitchener January 30th Théâtre St-Denis, Montreal ********* Affordable in some respects ( ticket prices start at $45), the trek does raise eyebrows in that front-section tickets cost $100 a seat. Common logic immediately begs the question: “if essentially no one bought your $10 album, why would they spend $100 on seats to your small-venue tour?” Still, we have buckets of love for Nelly’s talent and are keen to see her establish at least one successful “face” to this project – the most plausible being the route she’s going down now – touring. Thereafter, once re-grouped, she and her team can put the wheels in motion to ensure she delivers an album worthy of the strong push ‘TSI’ got. And not six years from now either. ThatGrapeJuice

Nelly Furtado Confirms German Leg Of ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ TourFor many, the unfortunate sales scored by Nelly Furtado‘s ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ were a harsh reminder as to why lengthy chart breaks can oft spell disaster for today’s entertainer. So, perhaps in learning her lesson, the ‘Say It Right’ star recently announced the launch of a tour in support of the album, hoping to push both she and the polarizing release. Now, she has confirmed its German leg. Details below… Kicking off in the March of next year, Nelly will hit Germany for five dates starting on the third of the month. The dates are as follows: 03.03.2013 – Berlin, Huxley’s Neue Welt 05.03.2013 – Köln, Theater am Tanzbrunnen 06.03.2013 – Hamburg, Gr. Freiheit 07.03.2013 – München, Kesselhaus 11.03.2013 – Neu-Isenburg, Hugenottenhalle Set to perform a number of cuts from her discography, this venture precedes the tour’s Canadian leg which begins in January. A sure fire way to force feed her cause back into the ‘mainstream’, here’s hoping this tour inspires Furtado to create a solid follow up to ‘Spirit’. A follow up, which boasts the commercial appeal of ‘Loose’ but the originality – or ‘nicheness’ if you will – of ‘Folklore‘. For, in age where Adult Contemporary sales are the bread and butter of many a label’s profits ( see Adele‘s ’21′ and Coldplay‘s ‘Mylo Xyloto’), there is no reason Nelly can’t be a serious chart force. That is, if she delivers a sound and promotional strategy strong enough to regain her fan base and entice the casual listener in time for release. ThatGrapeJuice

Must Hear: Nelly Furtado – ‘Bucket List’If, unlike most of the music buying public, have had the pleasure of hearing Nelly Furtado‘s ‘The Spirit Indestructible‘, you’ll already be familiar with ‘Bucket List’. Produced the ever genius Darkchild and co-written by Furtado herself, the stand out cut is without a doubt the best thing to happen to a album filled with stellar material, but just didn’t capture the hearts (or wallets) of the consumer. Think you’ve heard the best of Ms. Furtado? Think again below… (Exhales). What’s not to love? From its melody, arrangement (3:15), to a voice that belts without ever sounding strained, ‘List’ makes for a pretty surprising listen- and it’s one of the only jams on ‘Spirit’ strong enough to go toe to toe with the likes of ‘Te Busque‘ and ‘Say It Right’. If there is a follow up album lined up, we hope Team Furtado give the cut the justice it deserves and give it the singles treatment, or at the very least, make it a staple at her live shows. So…What do you think? ThatGrapeJuice

Nelly Furtado: ¡°My Long-Term Goal Is To Be An Independent Artist¡±One has to admire Nelly Furtado. For, unlike many artists who willfully and skillfully erase any trace of their flop projects, the Canadian native is standing by her latest LP ¡®The Spirit Indestructible¡¯. This, despite the set selling just 6,000 copies first week in the US last September. Having already opened up on the project¡¯s performance (or lack-thereof), the 34 year old offers ¡°interesting¡± insight on her career plans in the wake of the album¡¯s sales in a new interview with the Times Colonist. Full story after the jump¡ Intriguingly, Furtado revealed that work has already begun on the follow-up to the ironically titled ¡®Indestructible¡¯ ¨C stressing that it¡¯ll be her last contractual obligation to current label Interscope. Having been allowed to release 2009¡äs Spanish-language LP ¡®Mi Plan¡¯ independently on her own label Nelstar (thanks to a clause she insisted feature in her contract), the mother of one added that this is a route she plans to follow with future releases. Excerpts from her interview below ¡°The choices I¡¯ve made have helped me for the long term. Now, after this album, I can finally do whatever the heck I want to do. I can do a Portuguese album, or a Brazilian pop album, or another English album. Now I feel like I can truly do what I want to do. A bit of an exhale, I guess you could say. My long-term goal is to be independent, quite frankly. I got quite spoiled doing Mi Plan, and in the context of my English projects, I¡¯ve had a lot of creative freedom. It¡¯s quite addictive, that creative independence. You start to crave it more and more as you move forward.¡± {Source}******** Granted the eclectic nature of Furtado¡¯s sound could lend itself successfully to the Independent model, we reluctantly ask her to have an arena of seats. For, it¡¯s oh so clear that she¡¯s only spouting such lines due to her album bombing. Cynical sounding, perhaps, but the proof is in the figures. Indeed, had she even sold 20,000 copies first week, there¡¯d be some semblance of sense in her ¡°independent¡± ambitions (low production costs, un-polluted sound and a touring focus could net her $$$ aplenty). However, selling 6000 copies with a major label machine and ample promo suggests there¡¯s a bigger problem at hand; a fact which brings to light a prominent issue with the ¡°I¡¯ll just go independent¡± argument. For, while going it alone can potentially line ones pockets up handsomely, if the public don¡¯t care about your music, there¡¯ll be no sales and ultimately no dollar-shaped pie to get a bigger slice of. Food for thought. ThatGrapeJuice

New Video: Nelly Furtado – ‘Waiting For The Night’Once, twice, thrice, we’ve said it many a time, but can’t say it enough – Nelly Furtado has quite the hustle factor. For, despite selling just 6000 copies first week of her latest album ‘The Spirit Indestructble’ in the US last September, the eclectic star has pressed on with promotion. Indeed, in the months since, the 34 year old has announced a small-venue Euro-Canadian tour, and has released new visuals. The latest of the latter is for the LP’s fourth single ‘Waiting For The Night’. Peep the clip for the Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins produced number below… Easily one of the more “radio friendly” cuts the album has to offer, it’s unlikely the song nor its video will be able to revive a project which flatlined upon arrival. Nonetheless, solid effort. ThatGrapeJuice

Nelly Furtado Discusses Her Decline / Says Music Is A “Hobby”As flop albums go, Nelly Furtado is re-writing the “rule book”. For, despite her latest LP selling just 6000 copies first week in the US last year, the Canadian star is pressing on with promotion. A commendable decision, yet one which is seeing her confronted with blunt questions about her commercial relevancy – to her face. One such instance is a new interview with Gig City, who quizzed ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ singer on “why she’s not famous any more”. What did the 34 year old say in response? Her answer awaits after the jump… “That’s the price you pay for being passionate about music and refusing to believe it’s your job all these years. It’s just still seeing it as a hobby. My poor manager. He’s suffered many grey hairs because of it. I’m just really hard headed and I just do what I want to do. Some people come along, some people don’t. I’ve made my hobby into a career, but sometimes I still look at it as a hobby so I don’t always make the best quote unquote career choices. But I enjoy it every step of the way, which I think is the most important thing.” {Source}***************** While Nelly’s commitment to her craft is commendable, she seems to have difficulty balancing her artistry and facing reality. Put simply, should be aiming for middle ground. Hence, her words do not sound like someone who truly understands the industry she’s been in for nearly 15 years years, nor what it takes to enjoy longevity at the top within it (i.e. compromise). For, she can be as “creatively honest or erratic” as she pleases, yet, if she sells no records with her “hobby” then she gets dropped. In such an instance, where will the funds to work with hit producers come from? Or the corporate muscle, which once flexed gets one’s songs on radio and ultimately to the people that need to hear it to even consider attending your tour? Both of Furtado’s last albums were helmed by the industry’s most sought-after producers ( Timbaland and Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins). As such, this self-propagated suggestion that she’s some sort “Indie-Major” hybrid seems more a case of retro-fitting in the wake of a colossal flop. Here’s wishing her better fortunes next go round.
