I was browsing the Janet-Xone forum after class today and I noticed that they have a thread dedicated to GTIG. It's a poll asking whether the song is a "classic" or just a good song in general. I was really surprised at the comments like this one: Personally, I think GTIG is a perfect track all around. Beat, lyrics, vocals; all great in my book. I have no "connection" with the song as far as relating with the situation Janet sings about, but I think it's a great story and just a timeless single. I suppose this is just an appreciation thread. Post your thoughts on "Got 'Til It's Gone" Also, am I the only one who hears the lyrics clear as day here? They're a bit low-- sure, however, I don't think she's mumbling.

Mumbling? No. The way she sings it -- I think of it as her talking to herself. Y'know when you think outloud..you speak real low so no one thinks you're crazy lol.
In all seriousness though. I think it's a classic - the groove of it is infectious.

Everything about GTIG is perfect. I definitely consider the song a classic as well as the video. It was a very raw image-- super creative. Someone said this about the video:
I can't really come up with an argument against that, but I do feel like it was who Janet was at the time. I don't see it as fake or contrived. Thoughts?

That's one of the songs I skip most of the time on VR lmao I have to be in a good mood to listen to that song. I LOVE THE VIDEO THOUGH! I love the video more than the song. Janet looked gorgeous in that video.

Thoughts? yeah i don't think her image then was contrived. i think she was just exploring a different image as a black woman. something more afro-centric and meaningful. i mean she's never been mum about the issue of black pride and maybe her years dealing with depression and self exploration put her in that place. to showcase some facets of african culture. it wasn't just that video, it was Together Again, and the photo shoots she did during that time, we even see it with her sankofa tattoo. she may have moved on from that since then, but like most people she goes through phases and identities and her outward appearance is going to reflect that. ALSO i was singing GTIG earlier today out of nowhere.lol I really really love the song.

GTIG as a song is certainly a classic. As said, bassline is addictive. I think Janet's vocals are intentionally supposed to sound like speaking, to go with the more mellow vibe of the song. On some of the live versions of the song (Oprah, AFY tour) she sings it a bit more, and it still sounds great, for different reasons.
I don't think Janet's image at the time was contrived either. I think it was who she was then...and in some ways I think it was Janet at her "realest." IMO, Janet was still in that place for AFY, but glammed it up due to the pop craze at the time. SOAG and the eras since have shown this more "indie" Janet come out from time to time since.
Other great things about the song not discussed - the remixes, how great it sounds live (all 3 tours it was on it sounds different, but great each time), the video, and the choreography (Tina's original, and the routine to Tip's rap on the RWU tour).

Nice points! I think the majority of the remixes complimented the original pretty well. I think most of them (or the ones I have) were a nice mix of mellow and hip hop beats. All very smooth. As for live performances, I prefer Tina's original choreography. The whole look of all those performances from like '97 and '98 were so slick. I also loved the tour performances. Each one was different, especially AFY when she really slowed things down with her backup singers and chilling on the steps. Ahh, I just love J.

Oh yes, the choreography was great. It's some of the most visually pleasing work she's done. I loved the tribal influences mixed with hip-hop.

^^^I had a similar experience. I didn't like GTIG 'til I heard it at the AFY concert. I was surprised she did do GTIG and not IGL, but I'm glad she did. I believe she sang it live too, on the AFY tour. I like how she chilled with the ladies on the 2nd leg...but I love the bootlegs of the first leg when she worked the steps and the band walkin about too - you can tell by J groovin' that she does too.
I got the VR tour on DVD (previously had the vhs) after seeing AFY live and thats when I really got hooked too! The VR tour version is so funky! The AFY is more bluesy. And the RWU tour mix is kind of jazzy - I think she based it on the "mellow mix" - which is IMO the best remix of it.
