Mariah Carey Readies R&B Revival With New AlbumShe’s back! As one of the industry’s longest reigning divas, it’s only fitting that Mariah Carey‘s return to the charts is worked like an “event”. Hence, so as to celebrate the debut of her new single ‘Triumphant’ today, the singer’s label Island Def Jam assembled premium press for an exclusive Q&A with the songbird herself. That Grape Juice were fortunate enough to be on the call, which saw the 42 year old dish on her forthcoming new album. Find out what she had to say below… On R&B she explained: It would be incredible if we could bring that days when R&B records didn’t have to crossover and just be hits on their own.I remember back when those records were the soundtracks of people’s lives.I remember when I was pregnant with dem babies they only responded to the songs with the classic R&B feel. However, in an attempt not to offend her Pop counterparts, she added: It just makes me sad that there are so many great R&B artists out there that don’t get the chances that they should.Additionally, the icon also welcomed the possibility of collaborating with both Drake and Frank Ocean, revealing how excited she was to work with ‘industry shapers’ such as Meek Mill who lends a verse to ‘Triumphant‘. Although the hotly anticipated set has yet to be christened with a title, she did reveal that she has over 100 songs recorded to cherry-pick from and that Epic mastermind LA Reid will assume a poignant role in its creative direction. With many trying but failing to breathe life into the genre, if anyone has the power (on paper) to do so it is Mariah. Here’s hoping the project sees her make her biggest mark to date and kick the door wide open for future generations of R&B crooners. ThatGrapeJuice

New Song: Mariah Carey – ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)’ (Dance Mix)Mariah Carey is not playing. The premium diva continues to show her contemporaries how to launch a single. For, after premièring her latest gem ‘Triumphant’ amidst a blaze of hype last night, the cut’s official Dance (Vintage Throwback) Mix received its premiere moments ago. Boasting all-new vocals, the solely Mariah affair is a must-hear. Check it out after the jump…. All a bit “airy-fairy”, but it wouldn’t be a Mariah remix if it wasn’t. The presence of new vocals are welcomed both conceptually and literally. In an era where DJ’s are routinely employed to simply rip up and re-sew the original, it’s clear a real effort was made in this particular instance. A fact which, for us, earns the remix more gold stars than the original. For, while solid, the original plays like more of a Rick Ross & Meek Mill (ft. Mariah) record than the other way around. She also doesn’t use the length and breadth of her vocal range, opting for her now trademark whisper and pasted whistle notes. This, here, at least rights some of those wrongs. Hence deserves kudos. Mariah Carey Eyes March 2013 For New AlbumHer fans had hoped for its release this year. However, in a conversation with Billboard.Com, Mariah Carey‘s manager Randy Jackson has revealed that the icon has eyed March 2013 for the launch of the long awaited project. Full story below… Excerpt from Billboard’s ‘Why Mariah Carey Released Three Version Of Triumphant Single’: Previewing the multiple versions of the single — co-written and co-produced by Carey, Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox — reveals the diversity of musical genres expected on her untitled 14th album, tentatively due in March 2013. According to Carey manager Randy Jackson, releasing the three different versions of “Triumphant” speaks to her ability to cater to multiple audiences and radio formats.Confirming ‘Triumphant’s status as a buzz single, here’s hoping the decision to release the LP in 2013 doesn’t eliminate the buzz it was set to enjoy had it been launched this year. In saying that, with a number of projects lined up for release in that year, Camp Mimi could be readying a media onslaught which will see her push her upcoming movie and LP at the same time. Thus, killing two birds with one promo stone. On the flip side, one does have to wonder why she needs so long to complete the project when she’s been teasing fans with it since 2011. ThatGrapeJuice

Why Mariah’s ‘Triumphant’ Return Should Have WaitedIt was the comeback many had been awaiting. Indeed, it’s been three years since Mariah Carey last released a traditional studio album – and seven since she released one anyone actually cared about. Hence, the so-so reaction new single ‘Triumphant’ has received both critically and commercially is sure to come as somewhat of blow to the diva’s comeback campaign. A campaign which appears to be re-jigging strategy in light of the song’s performance (or lackthereof) As reported yesterday, the 42 year old’s manager Randy Jackson confirmed that the cut’s housing album is slated for a March 2013 release – essentially auto-rendering ‘Triumphant’ a “buzz single”. A status we have a hard time believing was the “plan” from the outset. For, even the most well-prepared and well-executed projects would never leave a seven-month gap between the first “taste” of the LP and its arrival in stores. Never. Thoroughly puzzling, it’s a “strategy” which begs the rhetorical question: why release ‘Triumphant’ now? Indeed, there isn’t an answer that could truly satisfy. Still much loved, Mariah commands a loyal “Lamb” community; yet beyond that ultra dedicated bracket, there isn’t overwhelming “demand” for her in the music marketplace. At least not to the feverish degree that “demands” such a rush-release. What’s more, having signed up to judge ratings juggernaut American Idol, a vast weekly audience awaits Ms. Carey-Cannon when the show kicks off in January. Surely, holding off until then would have benefitted her cause more – ala rival Jennifer Lopez? Instead, she’s left with a first-hurdle misstep which sees the song moving at snail-pace at radio, sitting at #95 on US iTunes, and notable by its absence in the Top 200 of the UK tally. There is, of course, room for the track to rebound; the debut of its music video is imminent, while its better-received remixes are due on iTunes next week. The latter being particularly noteworthy. In a recent interview with Billboard, Jackson touted the Dancier incarnations of the cut as being “for the fans”. Perhaps they are. Yet, we’re sure he and the rest of Team Mariah, are well-versed in the grey area that surrounds Billboard’s rules regarding the Hot 100. Indeed, unless structurally so different that it constitutes a “new song”, sales of remixes routinely count towards the title track’s overall chart placing. A practice which gives Mimi three lifelines to play with – if counting the original, Vintage Throwback, and Pulse versions of the song. For us, though, we simply hoped she’d release the right song, more importantly at the right time. Still, what’s done is done. Fingers crossed for a revival of interest in the project, though; as -”new voice” and all- Mariah remains one of the industry’s most enduring and authentic assets. It’s time she stopped selling herself short. ThatGrapeJuice

VH1 Declares Mariah Carey "Greatest Artist of the 90s"And then there was one. For the final round of Bracket Madness for the greatest artist of the 90s crown, Mariah Carey and TLC went head to head for the title. One woman with a five range octave and No. 1 hits that reach the double digits versus three women considered one of the greatest girl groups of all time. There are few matchups as great (and tough) as this pairing. In the end Mariah's reign as the pop diva trumped the CrazySexyCool stardom of TLC. No matter how you slice it, music in the 90s was heavenly. Mariah Carey's win represents all that was right with music. She was, and is, a versatile pop singer that dabbled in the R&B sound, she could actually blow, she writes her own material and her songs are timeless. We're hitting the play button on a little "me and Mariah, go back like babies and pacifiers" to honor her "Triumphant" win. Source

Im not in love with the song but it isn't bad. The song is so so. I hear more Rick Ross & Meek Mill than Mariah on this song. I think the song will do alright on the Hot 100.
